Cells of the stomach (ventriculus) that may be singly, in pairs beneath the columnar cells or grouped into clusters (nidi) or arranged in crypt-like outpocketings; functioning in renewal of other epithelial cells when destroyed by secretion or degeneration during molting or pupation.
